The ACLU joins <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/documents\/coalition-letter-urging-congress-to-refuse-to-fund-ice-without-reforms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">more than 500 human rights organizations<\/a> calling on Congress to rein in ICE and reject increased funding.\r\n\r\nVermont Representative Becca Balint has stated she is a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DTjWcSXCQ7-\/?igsh=aGd5cXVuejAxNjA2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hell no<\/a>\u201d on additional funding for ICE. Meanwhile, with an appropriations deadline approaching at the end of the month, Politico is reporting that some Congressional Democrats are \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/01\/14\/democrats-ice-funding-appropriations-00726552\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">feverishly working to fund the agency<\/a>\u201d while others are hoping to place legal constraints on an agency that consistently ignores legal constraints.\r\n\r\nVermont Senators Sanders and Welch have denounced recent ICE tactics but have not stated their positions on the question of ICE funding, and Vermont\u2019s senators have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acluvt.org\/press-releases\/aclu-vermont-response-us-senate-vote-supplemental-funding-package\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mixed record<\/a> on funding ICE and Border Patrol abuse.\r\n\r\n<b>ACLU of Vermont Executive Director James Lyall<\/b> made the following statement: \u201cWe thank Representative Balint for opposing additional funding for ICE, and we urge Vermont\u2019s full Congressional delegation to follow suit.\r\n\r\n\u201cFor Vermonters, this is not a difficult decision. ICE and Border Patrol have a shocking record of abuse and impunity that should have been addressed a long time ago. At this point, however, these agencies operate with total disregard for American laws and values, are terrorizing entire communities, and with $170 billion in funding, are poised to go to even greater extremes of violence and lawlessness.\r\n\r\n\u201cOur elected leaders need to stop acting as if this is business as usual \u2013 it\u2019s not. They need to stop acting as if these agencies can be reformed \u2013 they can\u2019t. The American people see that, the people of Vermont see it, and it\u2019s time for our leaders to do something about it.\u201d\r\n\r\nThe upcoming vote on DHS appropriations follows the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/press-releases\/aclu-and-aclu-of-minnesota-demand-immediate-action-after-ice-shoots-and-kills-minnesota-woman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">killing of Renee Good<\/a> in Minneapolis, where ICE is engaged in an unlawful, military-style occupation, with Donald Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/press-releases\/aclu-statement-on-president-trumps-threat-to-invoke-the-insurrection-act-and-deploy-military-troops-to-minneapolis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">threatening to invoke the Insurrection Act<\/a> and DHS Secretary Kristi Noem suggesting ICE agents can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawdork.com\/p\/noem-says-anyone-can-face-a-kavanaugh-stop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">require proof of citizenship<\/a> of anyone they encounter.\r\n\r\nThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/press-releases\/aclu-sues-federal-government-to-end-ice-cbps-practice-of-suspicionless-stops-warrantless-arrests-and-racial-profiling-of-minnesotans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ACLU filed a lawsuit<\/a> this week to stop warrantless arrests and racial profiling of Minnesota residents.\r\n\r\nThe ACLU of Vermont is encouraging concerned Vermont voters to contact Senator Welch's office at 202-224-4242 and Senator Sanders' office at 202-224-5141."}}],"use_default_media_contact":true,"name":"","email":"","phone":"","address":{"address_1":"","address_2":"","city":"","state":"","zip_code":"","country":"United States"},"pgp_public_key":"","spokesperson":null,"related_content":null,"issues":null,"toggle-pdf":true,"documents":null},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v24.9 -
